“you know i play with all sound off – always have, you know that. and i pretty much hate MMO audio from way down in my cold dead black heart, as a rule. in fact i don’t understand how or why anybody would play with it turned on. i mean…well…anyway. i was playing the latest version and i heard the thing you did with the thing, and i have to say…that was pretty sweet. the way the thing comes down and goes GGGUUHHSSHH and all that. pretty sweet.”

i think i’ll count this as a win.

Mr. Derrick,
Took me a while to find a way to leave you a message, but I just wanted to “Thank You” for some of the Warhammer Online Composition Podcasts you did back in 2007!
On one of them specifically you mentioned a technique of dividing the races into their own unique instrumentation. I took that idea and applied it to some music I’m currently writing for my First Symphony (There is a backstory w/ the music). Without your podcast I’m not sure how I would have organized everything I wanted to express.
Anyway, happy 2010 and congratulations on the lead programmer’s compliment… always nice to hear that stuff like that from time to time :)
hey, glad it was useful to you. lord knows i’m nothing if not organized. setting up boundaries like that really did help me keep things moving in the right direction…making each piece readily identifiable as belonging to a certain race. after making my little spreadsheet, all that was left to do was, you know, write good music. :)
best of luck with your project! sounds like a fairly herculean undertaking – one’s first symphony, complete with backstory….
Haha yes, I tend to organize a lot before even writing a note now and I’m sure part of it is “borrowed” from other composers like yourself. I have to agree w/ the lead programmer though, this was one MMO that I kept the music ON at all times… especially to hear the brass cues in the dwarven zones.
Thank you for the support! I’ve been working on it for 3 years now and have a few pieces scored/recorded, but many more to go :)
And… if you end up at the GDC this year I feel like I owe you a lunch, so feel free to redeem that “coupon” if you end up in the Chaos that is GDC!
Take care and have a great/prosperous rest of 2010!
